Product Description
Ice floats. Kiwi fruit doesn't. How do you pull down what's on top, while whipping up what's below? Lumps have nowhere to hide. Unlike other blades, which trap pockets of ingredients under the blades (diagram a), the Hemisphere blade sweeps along the base of the bowl and pushes ingredients on the bottom to the top (diagram b). Central blades are designed to pull the ingredients on the top down to the bottom, creating a perfectly blended mixture. Click on image to view larger
Why the Breville Hemisphere Control Blender?
Every Breville product begins with a simple moment of brilliance. The Breville Hemisphere Control began with the observation that some blending ingredients float—and others don’t. How do you pull down what's on top, while whipping up what's below? Other blenders often blend unevenly, over-processing some ingredients and leaving lumps of others. The Breville Hemisphere Control Blender solves this problem with its innovative hemisphere blade system.
This is how the Breville Hemisphere Control stands apart: no matter what you put in it, it can consistently and evenly whip up the perfect blend.
Even blending, every time
Declared one of the best blenders of 2012 by a leading rater of kitchen products, the Breville Hemisphere Control uses an innovative design: extra wide stainless steel blades are contoured to sweep along the base of the jug and push ingredients up while central blades pull ingredients down.
It's no wonder this blender has been called the best of 2012: this sleek design minimizes food traps and eliminates the need to dig ingredients out from under the blades or mix up ingredients by hand. Five speeds (including snow, mix, blend, liquefy, and puree) are supplemented by pulse, ice crush, and smoothie buttons. These buttons are preprogrammed with varying speeds—alternating pulsing and blending—to move ingredients through the jug, so you don’t have to move ingredients around manually.
Versatile functionality
The Hemisphere Control combines the functionality of a powerful blender with some food processing tasks. It crushes and chops to turn ice into snow for velvety cocktails and also folds and aerates for creamy smoothies and soups. In addition, thanks to its innovative blade design and high torque motor, the Hemisphere Control can handle blending tasks more efficiently and with less noise.
Designed with the consumer in mind
The Hemisphere Control blender is both easy to use and easy to clean. An LCD timer, 5 different speeds and three additional task functions make creating the perfect blend as easy as pushing one button. The permanent blade system is a snap to clean: just put in a drop of detergent and blend with water to remove food remnants, and then put the entire jug in the dishwasher. In addition, it is constructed from the highest quality materials. Heavy duty blades are made of engineered surgical grade stainless steel that ensures the blades stay sharp for longer, while the sturdy base is made from die-cast stainless steel.

I have found no knocks with this blender. It has done all tasks well. It does not leave lumps in my smoothies or shakes. All ice is flaked.
There are a couple of cautions, or perhaps just observations you might want to know. First, the top fits very well. Use two hands to remove it. It is very flexible, and it will pop droplets of purple berries in your hair. Second there is a plastic smell when the unit is first removed from the box. This dissipates very rapidly and then there is no more. The first use also emits a smell from motor heat, which worried me, but it also has not returned.
The automated cycle for a smoothie works very well if all ingredients are placed into the container before starting the motor. However, adding a lump of something will require running the unit again after the program is complete.
It is a bit like learning to use a High Efficiency washing machine for the first time. You have to learn what the programs do and how the controls work. You can read the instructions, or you can watch it work. Or you can watch it work and then read the instructions. Reading the instructions first will save you time, although it isn't as much fun.
So we'll see if it lasts. It does not look as heavy duty as their big food processor, but it seems rugged. It is just the motor smell when making the first smoothie that does have me worried.
UPDATE: After a couple of years of use, the clear plastic cap that screws into the lid had the tiny plastic ears break off and fall into the mix. The shards were quite sharp. The problem was related to manufacture: casting was not accurate and tabs on cap did not mate well with the lid. Breville provided a new lid with a new cap and the casting was extremely accurate.
And then when the blender was 4 years old, two of the ribs on the inside of the bottom of the jar broke off. This seems to be the same BPA-free plastic that broke on the lid. These ribs are very important. They mate with groves on the top of the blender motor. In the bottom of one of the groves there is an almost-hidden button. This button must be depressed by a rib on the jar before the blender will turn on. when the rib breaks off, the blender will not turn on if that is the rib that is supposed to be pressing on the button.
If your blender stops turning on, or if it is intermittent, check the ribs. If you turn the jar so that a full rib depresses the switch and everything works, you have discovered your problem. Amazon sells a replacement jar: Breville Jar with Blade, BBL605XL, BPA-free Eastman Tritan copolyester jug fitted with a permanent hemisphere blade and bowl system, Contoured bowl design minimizes food traps and makes for easy cleaning
Now if I can just figure out why the jar plastic is breaking... It seems to be from repetitive, almost imperceptible bending. Aging may play a part, too.
Since then, I've owned several blenders, including an Oster avocado-green plastic base model (ah, remember the 1970s?), a KitchenAid, and most recently a Cuisinart "Vari-Speed." All of these work, to one degree or another, but they all suffer from one or more of the following problems:
* Extremely noisy
* Hard to clean
* Ingredients don't get to the bottom, so you have to stop and push them down with a stick
* Insufficient blending, even after a long time on high speed
* Insecure lid that lets ingredients burst out when the jar if full
This Breville BBL605XL has none of these problems. It is a remarkably good product. I've owned it for over a month.
Let me tell you about it.
Noise
I have a Radio Shack sound meter. I filled my old blender (the Cuisinart) and the Breville with equal amounts of water and turned them on to their lowest speeds and, with the meter exactly one foot away, measured the sound. I then repeated the test at the highest speeds.
_____________Breville_____Cuisinart
Low___________71dB_________84dB
High___________83dB_________89dB
The dB scale is logarithmic. What this means is that something that is 3dB louder is actually twice as loud, and something that is 10dB louder is ten times as loud. The numbers don't entirely do justice to the amazing difference in sound level because the Breville has a much lower frequency sound (more bass) and therefore is less annoying, even if it were as loud. The fact that it is less than 10% as loud as my old blender is pretty amazing.
Cleaning
Every other blender I've had has a base on the jar that unscrews. You then need to clean the base, the blender blade assembly, and the rubber washer. You then must clean the jar, the lid, and the removable insert on the lid. By contrast, the Breville has the entire blending mechanism semi-permanently attached to the jar (it can be removed with screws, if needed). At first I thought this was a really bad idea because I thought I couldn't get under the blades to clean them. However, because of the wide, sloped design of the bottom of the jar, it is extremely easy to just push the wash cloth to the bottom of the jar, give it one turn, and everything comes clean. The lid is round and therefore wipes clean quickly. By contrast, my old Oster and Cuisinart blenders had square lids, and those four corners were always tough to clean, and there were all sorts of nooks an crannies. The Breville lid has no nooks. The only negative on the Breville lid is that the ridges on the edge of the lid, which provide an incredibly secure seal, do trap food. You need a brush if you really need to get stuff out of these grooves. However, they are quite wide apart, so any common brush easily reaches into the grooves.
It takes me less than half the time to clean this blender compared to how long it took me to clean my previous blenders.
Jar
This isn't listed above, but I should mention that the jar is plastic. Every other blender I have owned had a glass jar, and I always preferred this because plastic often discolors or picks up odors. However, this plastic is some form of polycarbonate, and has so far shown no signs of discoloration and has picked up no odor. I actually now prefer this to glass.
Blending Efficiency
This gets to the heart of what any blender is all about. Every blender I've owned will not pull large lumps of stuff down into the blades, or will pull some lumps, but then when the mixture starts to thicken (especially with smoothies), everything at the bottom just spins around, while all the other stuff just sits at the top of the jar going nowhere. (You know what I'm talking about, don't you?)
Not with this unit. I am truly amazed at how well this design pulls ingredients to the bottom. In addition, there is a "smoothie" button that cycles between a constant blending speed and a series of pulses. I've used this both with smoothies and with various ice mixtures, and have not had one single lump of un-blended ingredient remaining. Very nice.
Lid
The lid does not let ingredients leak out. I mentioned that I owned a KitcheAid (a long time ago). I returned that after one use because as soon as the ingredients hit the lid, they spilled out onto the counter. My old Oster blenders were a little better, but the lid on those were really designed merely to slow down the leakage, not to stop it. As everyone who has used a blender knows, when you hit the "high" speed button, the ingredients forcefully shoot up towards the lid and on some blenders can actually pop the lid off. Not with this unit. In fact, the lid fits so securely that Breville provides a "finger pull" loop to help you remove the lid. Don't get me wrong, it isn't that hard to get off, but it is definitely in there very securely.
Do I have any negatives about this blender? Actually, no. This is one of those rare purchases where everything is great, and nothing is bad.

UPDATE: Now three months and I love it more each time I use it! Moved on to soups and sauces, but still have smoothies almost every day! Best small appliance purchase ever!
One month later and still loving it. I have moved beyond smoothies (still making them daily) and I have started making hummus, and other tasty treats from the recipe book. I love this blender...
I have read many reviews about this blender and most love but a few bashed it and I think they were biased from the start!
I'm going to touch on points that I couldn't find an answer for in other reviews.
So far so good! I love frozen fruit and yogurt smoothies with ice and it does this beautifully! For me this is the test; to evenly blend so many different textures with no effort on my part! The ice is evenly crushed, the auto program does this hands free in one minute... Probably less but I haven't interrupted it yet. The biggest partical in my drink when this it done are the strawberry seeds, which is amazing. I have never noticed strawberry seeds before, blackberry, raspberry but not strawberries... Usually the ice but all I'm noticing are strawberry seeds.
The machine is quiet... The motor is very robust and really processes everything quickly and evenly. A great vortex is created that really draws the stuff on top to the bottom. I'm almost making icecream and I don't have to stop, stir, bash or bang, or add extra liquid... Completely hands free and fun to look through the centre of the lid and watch it go! (I'm keeping the lid on! ;-) I think tourq might be more important than speed... None mention this aspect though!
It doesn't dance across the counter, so you can be comfortable in letting it run hands-free while it runs through the program. (a heavy base keeps it in place, but not cumbersome...) I use it as tidy up time.
Cleanup is a breeze. The main reason I went for this model was the one piece construction. I hated the gasket and locking rings of my old blender so much. If you didn't break it down every time food found its way in to all of these crevices. (I have severe hand weakness with pain so I couldn't always get it apart and back together again.) There is nothing to take apart or leak for that matter.
To clean: just wiz with warm soapy water. If you need to disinfect, it is dishwasher safe or soak with a little bleach (manufacturers suggestions) But so far so good! NOTHING to take apart!
Another funny thing is you get out of the blender everything you put in, no problem! The smooth rounded bottom doesn't collect any food around the blade and base, so I don't have to try a scrape out half of my smoothie from the bottom of it! This makes my dogs sad though because with my old blender I would add a little warm water to any last bits hanging on and pour it into their bowls... Lol
It should also be noted that the blades are turned by an all metal 12 point torx cog & socket assembly that attaches the blades to the motor; not plastic like many other blenders. This arrangement is a major bonus as this is where many blenders fail... I don't think it will ever strip or slip! My last blender died when a large icecube jammed in the blades twisting them and breaking some little plastic flaps that fit together to spin the blades... I'm not worried about that with this one. It says you can turn a whole tray of ice to snow in one minute... I don't need that much, but with global warming it's good to know ;-)
I haven't tried one of the green smoothies yet, I prefer to chew my veggies, lol. But after reading and watching so many reviews that bashed this blender because of its performance here, I'm going to try one just to see. The deciding factor for me were two reviews that pited it against many other "blenders", performing a variety of tasks (including kale, the death of most,) this blender was tops a few years running for one* and ranked top or very high in others. (Cooks Illustrated*, Popular Mechanics (subscriptions needed), and this one on Consumer Search sums it all up: [...]
If you have problems with hand strength or pain this will be the blender for you. Right from the design of the lid with the easy pull top ring, soft tight sealing lid(nothing to line up or twist), easy to open pass through in centre of lid, to the self aligning base to jar, drop on system that doesn't require any strength to put it on or take it off. (The base of the jar simply drops on; no locking it down. It aligns itself to the base and sits there, no worry though it is very secure and stable.) The touch pad is receptive, easy to select, and with many programs to choose from, makes it completely hands free. I haven't had to wipe the very easy to clean base as of yet because nothing leaks from the top or bottom! But if it should, they are well sealed and it will be a breeze!
I will update this review if I should find anything wrong with this blender but I have owned quite a few and used professional ones in the restaurant industry and from what I've seen so far and read about this blender I'm sure I have a great blender that will do the job for years to come ;-) I also have a few other appliances from Breville for several problem free years and have friends and family whom love and trust this brand as well!

But let's be honest, this is an expensive blender. And given the price, I was pretty disappointed when I pressed the "pulse" button tonight and it stirred the contents of the container for half a second then stopped dead. If you hit any of the blend functions, the timer starts going but the motor does not spin up at all.
"A loose wire," thought I... but alas, this blender is essentially impossible to disassemble. Having removed every visible screw from the base, it remains steadfastly stuck to the upper cover.
Anyway, it worked well when it worked but for $267, it should work for at least five years.
No se con quien acudir pero necesito que me cambien el producto ya que no me esta funcionando :(
